What kind of doctor should i see if i have whiplash?
Auto accidents can cause whiplash. The kind of doctor you should see after sustaining whiplash would be one that treats auto injuries. The majority of whiplash injuries result from auto accidents. These tend to be accidents from which the person who suffered whiplash was struck from behind or the front but can occur when struck from the side too. What kind of doctor you see after you have sustained whiplash really depends on your geographical location and insurance, if you have an attorney, or if you live in a pip state. Auto accidents are not the only cause of whiplash.
Whiplash can be caused from any motion in which your or head is thrust forward and then backwards at an accelerated rate. This causes the ligaments and tendons in your neck area to become inflamed or worse torn. A doctor that can identify if you have whiplash will be able to offer a treatment program to try and eliminate pain while helping your neck move properly again.
Types of doctors that treat whiplash
- Medical Doctor
- Primary care physician
Not all of these can or will treat whiplash.
In some cases many people who have sustained a whiplash injury resulting from an auto accident will go to the ER. Most ER’s in the United States are designed to get you out of immediate life threatening danger but not actually treat your whiplash. In some cases, people who have suffered whiplash get excellent medical care at the ER. In most cases they will take some X-RAYS, determine nothing is broken and send you on your way to see your PCP.
Why won’t my Primary Care Physician see me for Whiplash?
When you make an appointment with your PCP and tell them you have been in auto accident, in many cases they will tell you they don’t treat auto accident patients. In most cases where your doctor won’t see you it’s because they don’t accept third party billing. Primary care physicians may not be set up for third party billing. Third party billing means they will bill the auto insurance company responsible for your bills.
